Toronto Maple Leafs forward @Auston Matthews has been named the National Hockey League’s first star of the week.
The NHL announced Matthews’ selection on Monday afternoon. J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks and @Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning rounded out the three stars.
Matthews scored four goals and nine points in four games with the Maple Leafs between Feb. 21 and 27, including three multi-point outings. The 24-year-old forward posted four points in Toronto’s 10–7 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 26.
Maple Leafs forward @Mitch Marner was not included in the three stars despite also posting nine points in four games during the week. Miller amassed eight points in three games; Stamkos scored two goals and four points in two contests, including three points in Tampa’s 3–2 win outdoors against the Nashville Predators on Feb. 26.
Matthews leads the Maple Leafs with 37 goals and 68 points in 49 games this year. He’s currently on pace to become the first Maple Leaf to score 50 goals in a season since Dave Andreychuk tallied 53 in 1993–94.
