They say you can never have too many goalies and the Leafs decided to bring one more in on a PTO.
@Dylan Ferguson is a former seventh-round pick of the Stars back in 2017, who was traded to the Golden Knights two days after his selection in a deal that sent Marc Methot to Dallas. He would end up playing in Vegas’ inaugural preseason game and was forced to appear in a relief appearance against the Oilers on November 17th, 2017 where he allowed one goal and made one save in about nine minutes of action.
Since then, Ferguson has primarily been developing in both the AHL and ECHL over the past three seasons. Last year, he played with the Hendersen Silver Knights as the backup where he went 5-4-0, posted a .907 SV%, a 2.90 GAA, and recorded a shutout in 13 games.
Should he secure a contract out of camp, Ferguson will almost certainly be assigned to the Marlies as the third-string goalie behind @Erik Kallgren and @Joseph Woll. He would also be competing for playing time against @Keith Petruzzelli and @Dryden McKay, both of who are signed to AHL contracts. Both the Leafs and Marlies ran into injury problems with the netminders last season, so having some insurance certainly wouldn’t hurt.
It also helps that Ferguson is going to be turning 24 this September and still has plenty of room for growth in his game. Best case, this becomes a low-risk high-reward contract for the Leafs. Worst case, they release him from his PTO and move on.
The Leafs begin their training camp on September 23rd.
